....and off to Kings Point on Friday, September 24, 1999 to see Jay for the first time since he left Nevada in July. Can't wait!!!
Killing time before we would be allowed to see Jay, we wandered around the beautiful campus of the Merchant Marine Academy which was founded in 1943. The weather couldn't have been better!
Wiley Hall, the admissions office, where a reception for the parent's and staff was held...hate to admit it but they had the BEST chocolate chip cookies in the universe at the reception.
The waterfront area. Jay has told us that he particularly enjoys coming here after dark, for solace, as he views the lights of New York City.
The marina area of the academy with the Yocum Waterfront Activites Center (not in the picture) where we spent an hour or so, basking in the sun as we looked out across Long Island Sound at New York City.
One of the 40' sailboats in dry dock for repairs. The academy has a very well respected sailing team, as one might have guessed.
This is the engineering building, Fulton Hall, where Jay will be spending much of his time over the course of the next four years.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Memorial Chapel.
Plebes in their "whites" performed a very impressive rifle drill.
At long last, the embrace Mom had been waiting for, lo, these many months. (my, but that hair looks short!).
OH, MY GAWD, JAY!!!!!!!!! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?
After regaining composure over the shock of Jay's "highly motived hair cut", we all went to Delano Hall for a very nice lunch of sub sandwiches on that marvelous east coast bread.
Happy but bald!
That evening we attended the "Beat Retreat" which was a spectacular performance of the incredibly talented Merchant Marine Academy Marching Band and the fantastic Nassau County Police Pipe and Drum Corp. WONDERFUL!
Walter was gracious enough to let us stay on his houseboat "Erawan" at Port Washington which is only about 15 minutes from the academy.
The interior of Walter's "Pad". Hard to believe we were actually on a floating platform. The house is two stories and beautifully furnished. COOL!
Jay next to his "rack". His is the upper....smart man!
Sally looks over Jay's shoulder at his work area. There is not a lot of room... that's bad!! But not a lot to keep clean... that's good!!
The midshipman hang their state flags outside of their rooms. Outside of Jay's room is the Nevada state flag and the Oregon state flag. Guess where his roommate is from?
Jay's corridor is known as "Bad Street."
The midshipmen paint motivational murals throughout the halls of the barracks.
Acceptance Day! Saturday, September 25th. First to enter the stadium was the USMMA Marching Band. This is the day that the plebe candidates are sworn into the U.S. Merchant Marines and the United States Naval Reserve.
In precision formation, the plebe candidates march into the stadium...
The plebes are addressed by Rear Admiral Stewart and the director of the United States Naval Reserve before the actual swearing in.
"I do!" They did... all done. Jay belongs to "Mother Merchant Marine".
The Merchant Marine Mariners whooped John Hopkins University at the football game that afternoon. Great game!
Jay volunteered to work the snack bar during football games. Smart man as he doesn't have to do push-ups denoting the academy score each time they make a touch down and stand throughout the entire game.
Back at the lake, Kiska and Jay enjoy their reunion with a good romp!
Off for a ride on the lake. Sun screen need here!
Kiska, of course, is always up for the ride.
Larry and Bill, Sally and Jay, enjoying brunch at the Windlass on Sunday.
"They left me... they left me!"
Back at the academy Sunday night, Mom gets a last hug... Goodbye, until Christmas vacation.
Striking the Nevada colors, we prepare to leave for home.
Rocketing along the Pennsylvania turnpike, we had our first glimpse of true Fall colors. While the trip east was spread over nine days, we had scheduled only three and a half to get home. Rocket Man at the wheel!
After a stop in Edinboro to see Kim and Mike (no pictures, dummie), we blasted our way west and stopped for a lunch break in Iowa (second day out) to visit with more Internet friends. "StgFrog" with "Tadpole", "Msmayor", "Wizz" and "Sierra."
Man... you never know what you're gonna see along the highways and byways of the good ol' United States.
We'd seen little bales, big bales, square bales and round bales but these were the first actual haystacks. Where's that needle?
Oh, ma gawd! Winter is surely coming with snow on the ground just west of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Sure looks COLD out there!
We stopped in Salt Lake City to have supper with our friends "Gadget" and "Beck" then off to Delta, Utah for a nights rest and an easy drive home on Thursdays, September 30th.
An early morning sunrise as we blasted through the spectacular canyons along Highway #50 in Utah.
Back across the Loneliest Highway in American, and home to our wonderful house by the river in Gardnerville.
